Honda's V8 connection
Hiroshi Abe

The editor in conversation with Hiroshi Abe, Technical Director of Honda Racing Development, which is fettling the marque’s second ever Formula One V8 engine Honda’s V8. Honda celebrated its 300th Formula One race at Hockenheim in July. The Japanese company started its Formula One adventure in 1964, just two years after diversifying from motorcycle into car manufacture. Initially it made its own transverse-engined V12 car at home in Japan and this won the last race of the 1.5 litre formula, at Mexico in October 1965. Notwithstanding that victory, Honda found back in those early days of its involvement the difficulty of making both the engine and the chassis in Japan. Now as the Honda Racing F1 Team it is once again making the whole car but it is doing so with the chassis work undertaken at the facility in UK that it acquired when it took full control of the BAR team in December of last year.
