We’ve all had it happen to us. We come out to our car after a long day at work or a hectic afternoon filled with errands only to find that the car won’t start. Maybe you left the lights on, or maybe the door wasn’t shut good. Regardless, a dead battery is still a huge inconvenience. Traditionally, jumper cables have been the rescue tool of choice. All you need is this set of cables and a second car.
What if there’s no other car around? That’s when it is handy to have a battery operated jump starter in the trunk. There are two types of these. Some clamp onto the car battery while newer ones plug into the cigarette lighter.
These jump starters work differently than jumper cables. The cables can instantly start the car by using the second car’s battery. However, jump starters have their own battery source which slowly transfers electricity over a period of 5 to 10 minutes.
Jump starters are very convenient to have, especially if you might be caught without another car around. Just be sure to charge the battery in them routinely as they will slowly lose their charge even when not in use.
